Tour Route
The central element of this tour of the lower Galilee will be the Kinneret, or Sea of Galilee. The 1st Century city of Tiberias is still the biggest town in the region, sitting on the bank of the lake. Built by Herod Antipas, this once pagan city is now considered one of the 4 Holy cities of Judaism. Beside it are excavations of the Jewish city of Hamat. While the ruins of Tiberias can be seen in the Archaeological Park, the National Park of Hamat reveals a stunning 5th century church with a well-preserved mosaic floor depicting the zodiac among other intricate symbolism.
The Christian pilgrim sites of Capernaum and Bethsaida also contain fascinating excavations revealing 1st century towns. Another great stop is the Yigal Alon Museum at Kibbutz Ginosar. Within the settlement of Kinneret, there is a museum telling the story of the first Zionist settlers who came to this region with a vision of establishing a functioning Jewish community. Many of these pioneers are buried here in a cemetery, including the poet Rachel and the composer Naomi Shemer, who put Rachel's poetry to music. The poetry describes the lives of these early settlers.
West of Tiberias, the tour will continue to Zippori, which was a major city in the region by the 1st century BCE, according to renowned historian Josephus Flavius. Its success was heightened after the Jewish revolt against the Romans, as they did not take part and were consequently rewarded by the Roman authorities by being named Diocaesarea. It was here that Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi compiled the Mishnah during the 2nd century.
There is an impressively preserved mosaic floor in a building here showing aspects of the life of Dionysus the Roman god of wine and vineyards. The small stones that make up the faces in the mosaic are some of the smallest of their kind ever discovered, and over 20 different colors are used to create the masterpiece.
In the main area of the city yet another mosaic was found, this time depicting the Nile River in a mythical scene of supernatural figures, including the legendary Amazons, and a theater has also been discovered here. There is a synagogues here is often used for bar mitzvahs and weddings.
It is surprising how big Zippori became considering there are no natural water sources here. The secret to their success was the aqueduct bringing water from in and a man-made reservoir built into the hillside.
