Nablus Gate (Damascus Gate)

This is without a doubt the most beautiful gate in the entire walls that surround the old city of Jerusalem. It is named after the roads that leads from it north to the city of Nablus. The Gate's second name in the Pole Gate after the Roman pole which stands at the Roman Gate and from it measurements were taken to state the distance from Jerusalem to the other cities. Today the gate's plaza is built as a theater where the is a very vibrant market place. On Muslim holy days and during the Ramadan the gate is the market fills up completely.

This gate is also the main junction for the Arab neighborhoods on the northern side of the gate and a passage for the religious Jews to the Western Wall or back home. This gate was built by the Ottoman Sultan in 1540, underneath the newer gate remains of the old gate built by the Romans on their way to Egypt are found. This gate was built with all the glory of the Roman Empire as did most of the Roman gates at that time and leads to the roman capital in this land at the time, Caesarea.

Today it possible to view the remains of the Roman gate and the plaza built beside it. It's also possible to begin your tour around the wall and its gates towards the Lions Gate from here.
