Church of St. John, Jerusalem

Site period: The Crusader era (1099-1260 AD).

The church of St. john in the Mountains is located in the Ein Kerem neighborhood in Jerusalem, it is a catholic church built by the crusaders about 800 years ago, and belongs today to the Franciscan order which is the largest and most important order of all the catholic streams. The church of St. John in the Mountains lies on the top of the village and stands out relative to its surroundings due to its magnificent bell tower.

Starting from the 13th century you can see how Christian tradition ties its knots with the village of Ein Kerem and John the Baptist, and introduces in the church the cave which John the Baptist was born in. St. John church in the Mountains was built in the traditional Crusader fashion, and was built over the ruins of an old Byzantine church which was also built over the remains of an old Hellenistic temple.

* You may visit the church every day of the week except for Sundays, between the hours: 9 AM -12 PM and 2 PM - 4:30 PM
