The Gate lays at the southern tip of the wall surrounding the old city of Jerusalem. It is the closest gate to the holy Western Wall and was built by the Ottoman Sultan in 1540 when he renovated the entire walls of the old city. Today it is the main entrance to to the Western Wall and is mostly used by tourists and people coming to pray.
The gate was widened by the Jordanians to allow the traffic of vehicles. This is one of the best locations to buy souvenirs of the old city of Jerusalem and Israel.
