Lions Gate, Jerusalem

The Lions Gate connects the Muslim quarter to Wadi Juz and the Mount of Olives. Its name originates from the lions which are carved on to the stone above the gate. Legends that Sultan Suleiman dreamed that Jerusalem was surrounded by lions and therefor he build the walls surrounding the city to protect it. This gate is 735m above sea level and is a part of the actual walls built by the sultan in 1538. From this gate there is a path which leads to 'tormented road' and reaches Guy st. right outside the gate is a large and active Muslim graveyard.

From the Lions Gate the soldiers were taken into the Arabs cars after being captures in the war of independence, and through the same gate the brave paratroopers crossed into the old city of Jerusalem in the 6 day war. The Lions Gate is also an easy pass-way for hikes going down from the Mount of Olives to the old city.
