The Dead Sea is the lowest
place in the world, thus being such an intriguing place. The concentration of
minerals and salts in the sea water has made the Dead Sea a sought out place
for skin treatments, and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year who
want to enjoy the virtues of its sea water. The Dead Sea is located in close proximity
to some of the most impressive attractions in Israel and visiting them during
your stay in the area is considered a must. So here are some of the best places
to see in the Dead Sea area.
Masada is one of the five forts that were built in the second temple
period (500 BC). The fort sits on a hill top 500 meters high and you can go up
to the site either by foot or in a cable car. The story of Masada begins in the
time of Herod who built the fort in order to protect his relatives (more about
the story of Masada in this next link). Masada was remarkably preserved and the
site is like a journey back in time to BC. In addition, from Masada you can see
a gorgeous view, one of the most amazing in Israel. Not to be missed.
Ein Gedi Nature Reserve is one of the most special places in Israel. In
order to understand its uniqueness you have to understand the Dead Seas’
location in the dessert. The Dead Sea is one of the driest places in Israel and
the amount of winter precipitation is close to nothing. However, in the Ein
Gedi Nature Reserve are four fresh springs with sweet water that give life to
the areas’ vegetation and also give life to many animals living in the area.
Ein Gedi has functioned as a source of water and encouraged settlement in the
area. As evidence archeological remains were found, such as a temple from the
Chalcholithic period (5000 years back). Worth a visit!
The story of Qumran National Park starts 2200 years back. But the actual
discovery of the site happened only in 1947 by a Bedouin boy that was grazing
his flock in the area. He was transporting his sheep and throwing rocks in a
certain direction in order to lead the flock, when one of the rocks went in to
a tiny cave in the area. When he threw the rock again in the same direction, he
heard a metallic sound which led him to enter the cave in order to understand
what he hit. The “discovery” that boy made brought many men of science and
archeologists from all over the world to examine and dig in the area and they
revealed parchment scrolls that tell the wonders of the Qumran period. These
disclosures are considered one of the most significant discoveries in recent
years.
One of the most impressive attractions in the Dead Sea area is nature
itself. We invite you on an unforgettable experience in the Dead Sea area. The
field trip is accompanied by a guide who is a professional field driver so you
don’t have to be a professional driver yourself. Anyone over the age of 22, with
a driving license can drive the car. The trip will take you to the most
beautiful corners in the wilderness area of the Dead Sea. So if you’re nature
lovers, this trip will leave you with your mouths open.
As you may have noticed, the Dead Sea area is full of activities of all kinds. If you didn’t find what you were looking for in this article, you can go to the next page where you will find all the attractions in the Dead Sea.
